Donald Trump traveling abroad amid swirling controversy at home

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump embarks on his first trip abroad as president today amid growing controversy at home over his firing of former FBI Director James B. Comey and the special counsel probe of Russian interference and potential connections to Trump aides.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who on Wednesday made the surprise decision to appoint former FBI chief Robert Mueller as special counsel in the Russian probe, yesterday directly contradicted Trump’s claim that his memo outlining Comey’s failings was a reason for Comey’s ouster last week.

Trump is leaving for an eight-day trip that includes stops in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Italy, the Vatican and Belgium.
